Strategies For Coping With & Reducing Anxiety

While small doses of stress and anxiety are healthy and normal, too much of it at once and over time can be debilitating. It’s important to recognize when you are feeling anxious and overwhelmed and find healthy ways to get it under control.

It’s in your best interest to be proactive and take action when you find that anxiety is getting in the way of you completing your daily tasks and functioning. The good news is that there are a lot of different tips that can help you get to a better and calmer place. Review some strategies for coping with and reducing anxiety so you can regain control and put a smile back on your face.

Try Intense Exercise

Working out is good for your mind and body. It’s a chance to clear your mind and challenge different muscle groups. You not only want to get daily exercise but also try some intense workouts every so often. These can be smaller bursts where you’re exerting more energy and truly breaking a sweat. For example, you may want to do some intervals where you run fast and then walk and keep switching off for about twenty to thirty minutes. You might also want to take a kickboxing or weight lifting class at the gym, which will motivate you to work hard and go strong for an extended period. The happy chemicals in your brain will be released, and you’ll sleep better at night.

Address it Head-On

Now is a good opportunity to take a step back and try to pinpoint what may be making you feel anxious. It could be that you’re dealing with anxiety or a mental health disorder. You may also have past trauma that is being triggered, or you are struggling in your romantic relationship. No matter the reason, you want to make sure you take good care of yourself and focus on healing. One option is to remove yourself from your daily responsibilities to get some alone and “me” time to work on your mental health. In this case, consider registering for a customized holistic mental health retreat where you can work on emotional healing and be guided by licensed therapists. You’ll walk away feeling better in touch with yourself and more confident that you have new coping skills you can apply in your daily life.

Journal

Another strategy for coping with and reducing anxiety is to write in a journal. Journaling can be very therapeutic and get all that’s going on in your mind down on paper. You can use a journal to problem-solve and reflect on various matters in your life. You can also use it as a way to practice gratitude and record what you are most thankful for in your life. Keep in mind that journaling doesn’t always have to flow and make sense. Just write down whatever pops into your mind and release any pent-up anger or anxiety. You can also write a letter to yourself reviewing what you like about yourself and where you see your life in five and ten years from now, to keep it goal-oriented. Positive self-talk and affirmations can help build self-confidence and allow you to effectively reduce and manage stress and anxiety

Eat Right

There are also foods that can increase or decrease anxiety levels. If you want to reduce anxiety, then be sure to eat right and consume a balanced diet. For example, you will want to make sure you eat leafy greens, berries, eggs, and avocado. If you have a sweet tooth sometimes, then you can always break off some dark chocolate to enjoy. Ideally, you want to limit or cut back on processed foods and sugar, which can increase anxiety levels and make it harder to maintain a healthy weight. Also, limit alcohol and caffeine in your diet as another way to reduce anxiety. Cooking at home can be mindful and make you feel happy when you sit down to a home-cooked meal that you prepared.

Engage in Meditation & Yoga

If you want to cope with and reduce anxiety, then engage in meditation and yoga. Set up a relaxing area in your home where you can focus on the task at hand and get in touch with your thoughts and feelings. Meditating can help you slow down and live more mindfully. It can also reduce blood pressure and ensure that you sleep better. Be patient because meditating can be challenging the first few times you attempt to do it. Yoga is another rewarding activity to add to your schedule if you want to reduce anxiety. You’ll gain strength and flexibility, all while being able to slow racing thoughts and feel more relaxed as you flow through the different moves.

Disconnect & Spend More Time in Nature

While technology can be helpful, it can also be anxiety-provoking and addictive. You may be someone who is always connected to tech for your job, and then you come home at night and play on your phone or laptop. Instead, choose to disconnect from technology whenever possible, and you have the free time. You can use it as an opportunity to spend more time in nature, soaking up all the beautiful sights and smells that these surroundings have to offer. Go for a mindful walk or take a hike on a new trail. You may also want to plant and work in a garden in your backyard, which can be gratifying.

Get Enough Sleep & Rest

Another strategy for coping with and reducing anxiety is to get enough sleep and rest. Being overtired can make you feel sluggish and moody. You will notice that on the days you don’t sleep as well or go to bed too late, you wake up in an anxious state. Therefore, it’s important to get on a regular sleep schedule and set up a relaxing bedroom retreat. Also, take breaks during the day when you need them to regroup and avoid letting stress build up. To feel your best mentally and physically, you should aim to get at least seven to nine hours of restful sleep each night.
