Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. I love the cool down period and the beautiful burst of colors on everything. The crisp air just creates a ton of memories for me!
I also love that Autumn is bountiful in not only the harvest but so many ways to use the season in a frugal way from everything from food to home décor.
Ten frugal Things About Autumn
1. Canning
Did someone say canning? Canning is the one big money saver of the year in Autumn. Have a look at this Canning book I found on Amazon. It has a wealth of information on how to can properly and also some delicious recipes! If you didn’t grow a garden this year, you can still can when you stock up on cheap produce from your local farmer’s market.
2. Crafts
With the leaves falling, there are endless crafts you can do with leaves. Scour Pinterest and you will find a plethora on how to use nature’s free craft supply in numerous ways.
3. Back-To-School sales
Back to school sales are great for school supplies that you might need immediately, but you can save on office supplies and even school supplies needed throughout the year and into next year by buying the best deals in larger quantities. If you have a child who loves to craft, you may be able to get a holiday present or two for really cheap months in advance, as well.
4. Fall Fares on Plane tickets and hotels
If you didn’t get to go on a vacation this summer, fall fares on planes and in hotels are often much cheaper as the weather gets cooler. Plan to do a weekend getaway on the cheap in September or October and you may get to enjoy some semi-warm weather on your trip.
5. Clothing is cheaper
It is dirt cheap this time of the year. Jeans are often 30-50% off so that stores can get ready for the huge stock of back to school items coming in. Also, get great deals on summer clothes for next year. Many items that are “summer” can be used year round including polos, t-shirts, and skirts.
6. Outdoor Gear
Get very low-cost outdoor gear this season. Patio furniture and lawnmowers will be slashed in price as will BBQs. You can also get shrubs and trees at huge discounts.
7. Car Sales
If you are in the market for a new car, Fall is your season to save. Car lots are making room for next year’s models and most have large discounts that can save you thousands.
8. Apples
It’s no secret that apples are in season in the Fall and if you know how to make your own apple butter or apple sauce, you can make enough for the year by visiting an orchard that allows picking on the cheap. Also, watch the paper and Craigslist. Many times, there is such an over-abundance they offer some for free!
9. Coupons
Autumn brings great coupons out and available. You can save and stock up on pantry items for the months to come by getting your hands on coupons for snacks, lunchbox favorites, canned goods and so on.
10. Electronics
Don’t forget how low you can get electronics. Laptops and desktops as well as tablets go down as stores try to entice college students to buy as well as many cell phone companies offer great deals on service packages.

Autumn is my favorite season. In fact, I already brought out my fall decor and have finished burning one pumpkin spice candle and working on my second.
Our family enjoys wandering through a corn maze, taking in a football game, visiting a pumpkin patch, and taking a hayride at one of the many Fall Festivals.
The cooler weather is coming, and I’ll enjoy curling up with my blanket, watching football, and basking in the aroma of my pumpkin candle. Happy celebrating fall!

Seems like the opposite is true for hotel prices in Arizona. As the weather cools off, the prices go up. I’d love to learn how to can. I’m going to look for a class so I can make homemade canned goods for the holidays.
I’m always up for a good sale! I think I’ll be taking advantage of these. Not having been in school for years and not having kids, I’ve forgotten about the great deals out there around this time. Thanks for sharing!

I grow several organic gardens, so last year I canned like crazy! I also dehydrated the shiitake mushrooms I grew, because we had too many to use fresh. It was so easy, and they’re fabulous. (Plus, they’re quite pricey in the stores.) We went on our first visit for the season to the apple orchard on Labor Day, but we’ll return several times as other varieties are ready to pick. I’ll also buy a ton to turn into applesauce. It’s so easy and delicious! Love preserving summer treats to pull out on a chilly winter day.
Autumn is my favorite season, I love it! I agree with #1 completely. I love canning and it saves so much money during the year!

It’s still over 90 here but I’m looking forward to turning off the AC and opening some windows! I don’t can, but may next year. We’ve had an eventful year and let the garden slide, so there isn’t much to do anything with. #5 reminds me, dd has outgrown all her long pants. I should take her shopping before it gets too cool for her to go out in shorts.

LOL, I was thinking last night as the air conditioner in the living room kicked on – “when did it get so cold at night?” My frugal, couponing mind convinced my body to get up and turn it off. Then at 9 AM this morning I was thinking, “why did I do that? we are melting!” Ya gotta love living in Texas haha.

I love fall too. I actually did can some of our cherry tomatoes a few weeks ago because they just put on so many, we couldn’t eat them all. I would usually freeze them but decided to can some. Made salsa with one batch, should be good this winter.

Fall is the cheapest time to travel to the Caribbean! It is hurricane season, but we have cruised many times during this season and have never run into bad weather. Places like Bermuda and Aruba are also outside the “hurricane belt”, so your odds are good there. Cruises can usually steer away from hurricanes if trouble is in sight, and the cost savings is significant!

I love the fall too but often forget about the extra money saving deals this time of year. Excellent reminders. I also needed the encouragement to tackle my first round of canning. What better way than to begin with apples?!! Thank you! 🙂
Fall is also my fav time of year. I love the fall fruits and vegetables. I just made a peach cobbler last week and it was yummy and warm – feels like fall to me.
I usually spend this season heading up to a place called Apple Hill. We shop the local farms and stock up on apples. I then do a bake-a-thon of all things apple and freeze for future meals.
Fall is also the time I plan all my holiday gifts. I usually have to make them because income is tight but I also enjoy crafting so preparing things in advance helps make November and December stress free and family focused.

I love autumn too! Great tips for saving money this time of year. We planned a family vacation for the end of September. Not only because of the cheaper costs, but since all the public school kiddos are back in school we, as a homeschool family, can take our vacation break when most families are staying home and avoid the summer crowds.

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. I love the crisp chill in the air, the beautiful color palette nature presents to us, and you’re right, I tend to be more inspired to find frugal decorating and entertaining solutions during this season. Thanks for the great post!
Love this list! Autumn is my favorite season also. One of our favorite activities is to visit the apple orchard in our area. It’s free to visit, you just have to pay for the apples you pick. It’s beautiful, the air is so refreshing, and best of all it’s free!
